1.What’s your business?
Roundabout Labs is a strategy and development consultancy that works with companies to develop new technical projects and ideas and with startups to take them from conception to funding. Simply put, we help startups to startup and companies to develop technical projects.
2. Why did you choose MK? Skills and Location
We moved to be nearer to family, but MK was chosen as our business base because it has an interesting and entrepreneurial business environment, really good availability of affordable housing for us and staff, and also because of the transport links. Our primary business is with London based companies, and when we tell them how quick and easy it is to get into Euston, the response is often that it’s quicker for us to get to central London than it is for them to get in from the suburbs.
3. What’s your interest in Big Data?
We work with many startups in London on their Big Data projects. It means many things to different people, but we are experienced in helping companies to develop Big Data projects and also to extract the right data for both creating new startups and generating business opportunities. We are currently working with a startup that generates large datasets from a mobile app and providing highly targeted content to that user. The amount of data we get in per day is larger than most databases a business has to deal with in a month and we’ve only just started.
4. How can Big Data be instrumental in your expansion?
We know how valuable Big Data can be. It is a core part of our technology offering to our clients, but also to our own projects we intend to launch based around the Internet of Things. Understanding that generating good data is not the only part of the story is key but knowing how to turn it into valuable business information is even more important. The transformation of the data is where knowing which technologies to use is invaluable and there are some really interesting new Big Data technologies that have appeared in the last 2 years or so.
5. How can UCMK support you? Service, consultancy etc
We are looking forward to having the ability to store data and extract useful information from a Milton Keynes based data hub rather that relying on other providers. The ability to share knowledge and skills with other companies will also improve our ability to bring a best practice approach to our clients. We also would thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to be involved in workshops and hackdays to both find out about and share knowledge around Big Data and how it can best be used in business.
6. What’s the best thing about being in MK for business?
We get all the benefits of being in London, including the access to clients and suppliers from London, but without the crowded commute every day and less hours at home. If you want work/life balance, then MK couldn’t be a much better place to locate a business.
7. How has your business developed? i.e. Staff numbers? Turnover
We work as a consultancy, so we actually only have a small core staff. However, we work with startups in London and elsewhere to develop their businesses. In the last 3 years, we have worked with enterprises to generate sales in the millions and also helped to start businesses with over 10 companies, and have helped to generate both sustainable businesses and jobs in those businesses. All in all, we have probably created between 10 and 20 jobs in that time and generated investment and business valuations in the millions. While our company has not necessarily grown in staff, partly out of choice, we have definitely had an impact on the wider economy.
